A family owned vineyard situated below St Martha's Church and adjacent to Chilworth Manor which produces sparkling wine and still rose. Similar to Garyfriars, grape varieties are mainly Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Etherley Farm - Surrey Hills

Etherley Farm attracts a wide range of visitors, from couples of all ages who come to visit the area, to first time campers, families with small children and groups of friends. The site is also popular venue for Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

Nestled at the foot of Leith Hill in picturesque Surrey countryside, the campsite is simple - 2 fields surrounding a working farm - and most bookings are for tents. It does welcome Campervans and motorhomes, though there is no electric hook up. They do not allocate pitches so you choose the perfect spot.

This may be quite an obvious one, but I don’t know if you realise the full extent of the functions of the Spotify app . You can either use Spotify free, with ad’s and needing wifi, or pay a small monthly subscription to get premium. This subscription can be split between a “Family”, which is up to 6 people. With premium you have uninterrupted music and can download the songs when you have internet, so that when you’re out you can listen to any of your downloaded music. A fun extra with Spotify are their playlists, which appeal to a variety of different genres and moods. They also have hundreds of podcast series, which are up to date and offer a wide selection. It is one of the best travel apps as it reduces the needs for other apps or internet, as why download a podcast app to pay for when you can combine it with everyday music? I strongly recommend downloading it and enjoying fresh tunes or tales as you drive along that highway.

Sun seeker . This app has a great many potential uses. From knowing where shadows are going to fall at different times for photography, to figuring out the best place to camp for morning sun, or planning your beach trip for the perfect time.

Shows either a flat compass view, or an augmented reality view with the solar path, the position at each hour, sunrise and sunset times, and much more.

This app isn’t free unfortunately, but well worth the cost for those who require it.

Further lifting of the rules will happen if certain conditions are met - such as the vaccine rollout going to plan. The aim is for all restrictions to be lifted by 21 June at the earliest.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has also announced details of Scotland's path out of lockdown, with restaurants and non-essential shops opening on 26 April at the earliest. Northern Ireland and Wales will outline their plans in the coming weeks.

8th March

All schools and colleges will reopen

University students can return for practical courses. There will be a review by the end of the Easter holidays for all other students

Face coverings are recommended in class for secondary school students and also for parents and staff in primary schools

Wraparound childcare can also return for vulnerable pupils and where it is needed for parents or carers to go to work, support groups or to seek medical care

Two people from different households can meet outside for recreation, which can include "a coffee on a bench"

One nominated person can visit care homes, but will need PPE, a lateral flow test and to "keep physical contact to a minimum"

29 March

People will be allowed to meet outside, either with one other household or within the "rule of six", including in private gardens

The stay at home rule will end, but the government will urge people to stay local as much as possible

Pop-up campsite opens at Blenheim Palace

Due to the popularity of the Bladon Chains Caravan and Motorhome Club site, the club is setting up a temporary campsite within the grounds of Blenheim Palace. This pop-up campsite will open on 11th September and close on 1st November.

You’ll have the pleasure of seeing the magnificent Blenheim Palace and the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surrounding grounds which are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Staying at the member-exclusive Blenheim Palace pop-up campsite will also provide you with easy access to the many beautiful attractions that Oxfordshire offers.

Pitches measure 11m by 10m and have space for a caravan, motorhome, tent or trailer tent (and one car only), with a maximum occupancy of eight per pitch. Pitches are allocated on arrival on a first come first served basis. There are also temporary shower and toilet facilities, fresh water and all pitches have electric hook-up.

A pitch (for two adults) costs £23.10 per night. Additional adults are £7.40, children (5-17) are £2.20 and there's a £1 booking fee. Under 5s go free and dogs are welcome.

The new site is located just outside the wall of the palace garden so as well as views of the grounds, guest can easily visit the palace, with 30% off admission tickets for the park, the palace and the gardens. Campsite visitors will also get 20% off at the gift shop.

Blenheim Palace, home to the Dukes of Marlborough since the eighteenth century, was also the birthplace of Winston Churchill. The nearby Bladon Church is also in walking distance with Churchill’s modest but memorable grave.

Driving in Europe Checklist

There are a number of requirements you might not be aware of when driving in Europe. Below is a checklist to help plan your trip.

Coronavirus update

Driving to, through and within France is strictly regulated right now. If you need to travel to France, you must complete an ‘attestation’ form and show it to border officials and the police on request. This form must state one of seven official reasons for entering the country. You can find the ‘attestation’ form here (see ‘International travel to metropolitan France’ section).

Once in France, drivers must either have a personal or employer’s certificate with them. The personal certificate needs to be completed by the driver and the employer’s professional travel waiver certificate must be filled in and signed by the driver’s manager. You download all ‘attestation’ forms from the French Government website.

Check the Foreign travel advice section of the GOV.UK website for up to date advice on all other European countries.

• If you do require repairs on your vehicle remember that the costs of parts and labour may differ to those in the UK but our rescue teams in Europe will work towards ensuring that you get the best rate possible.

• Motorways in France are privately managed so law states that if you break down you must use the roadside emergency telephones or dial 112 as we cannot send out assistance. You’ll be put through to the police or motorway services operators who’ll send out a rescue company to come to your aid. If they don’t, just call us.

• You may have to pay labour and towing charges on the spot but we will cover these charges as long as the vehicle is towed to the recovery company’s depot.

• On a motorway, if you have a breakdown, it is vitally important that you get all people out of the car immediately, put your high-vis jackets on and move to a safe position.

• Our RAC vans do not operate in Europe so instead you’ll be assisted by the service providers and partners that we have chosen to work with.

We are planning a phased reopening of our club sites from 4 July

We’re excited to welcome back our members to our campsites across England and Scotland. We’ve been busy making sure we will be ready to receive our guests from July in England and Scotland, and later in Wales and Northern Ireland.

In line with the latest UK Government guidance, we are very pleased to share with you our plan to open the majority of our campsites from 4 July in England and 15 July in Scotland. At the moment this applies to our sites in England and Scotland only. The timescales for reopening our Club sites in Wales and Northern Ireland will be published once we have guidance from their administrations.

We are planning a phased reopening starting with our campsites in England and Scotland to ensure that they are adapted to the new social distancing and safety requirements set out by the UK government and Administration.

At this moment we are not able to open all of our Club sites, however, we will constantly review whether we are able to open any more campsites in the future. Our priority is first and foremost the health and safety of our staff, our members, our guests and the local communities.

England's campsites prepare to open in July

Campsite owners reveal social distancing measures ahead of summer openings as bookings rise sharply following Johnson’s announcement of lockdown easing

Campsites in England are preparing to reopen in July, with social distancing measures in place and reduced capacity. Under the government’s Plan to Rebuild (pdf) , published on 11 May, accommodation providers may be able to reopen from 4 July, subject to certain conditions.

Bookings with Cool Camping, a website and guidebook representing 600 UK campsites and glamping sites, have increased fivefold since Boris Johnson’s speech on 10 May announcing the plan, although they remain lower than usual. On 15 May the company launched a coronavirus booking guarantee, allowing customers to book with a 20% deposit, pay the balance 10 days before the holiday and move the booking date for up to 18 months in the event of continued or renewed restrictions.

While 4 July is the earliest possible reopening date, this will apply only if the government’s tests have been met regarding the NHS, death rates, infection rates, testing and PPE, and if it is confident that easing measures will not contribute to a second peak. This could mean that campsites in some regions of England may be open before others, while the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland may adjust restrictions at different times. In Wales, holiday accommodation is due to remain closed until 26 September, but this guidance is being reviewed every 21 days.

Listings on the Cool Camping website now also include proposed social distancing measures. All sites will increase cleaning and many will reduce site capacity to allow more space between pitches. Chapelfield Camping in the New Forest, for example, is opening a second meadow in order spread out the tents. Some sites will be adding more toilets and showers, while others, such as Ettie’s Field in Leicestershire, will introduce time slots for using the showers. Many will reopen basic facilities before communal areas such as on-site shops.

The Camping and Caravanning Club, which represents more than 1,300 UK sites, is also looking into social distancing and other safety measures, and has called for more official guidance. In a statement, Sabina Voysey, the director general, said: “We would urge the government to provide greater clarity on how the sector can safely open and operate campsites with additional measures in place.”

Voysey has suggested that, initially, campers should be permitted to visit only local sites: “We believe that you don’t have to travel far for a break and a change of scene – by supporting local businesses and local economies in a sensible and phased approach, we can start to help the rebuilding process when the time is right.” She added that, based on the earliest possible reopening, the organisation will have lost £25m during lockdown.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club also said it is developing new operating, cleaning and safety protocols ahead of reopening. While Pitchup.com, which lists about 1,500 UK campsites, says bookings have increased 135% since Johnson’s speech compared with the previous week. It estimates that staycations could increase 81% year on year if holidaymakers are unable to travel abroad. Dan Yates, Pitchup’s founder, has noticed that while tents are usually the most popular form of accommodation, people who are already booking ahead for 2021 are choosing lodges, cabins, caravans or motorhomes. “Structured accommodation offers a layer of protection and security which is important to holidaymakers who understandably feel a bit wary at the moment,” he said. “However, this uptick could also be representative of families who haven’t traditionally holidayed outdoors in the UK who have more money to spend on higher-cost accommodation.”

Bookings with Canopy and Stars, a collection of glampsites, have also increased over the past week. However, Mike Bevens, the managing director, said: “There is still a nervousness from travellers who don’t want to book too early. Over 50% of our guests said that they are planning to make a last-minute booking when they have more information about travel restrictions.” The company is introducing a Clean & Safe charter for site owners to sign up to, committing them to additional safety and hygiene measures. It has also collated the sites that offer self-check-in, requiring no contact with anyone else.

Visit Britain, meanwhile, is developing a quality mark for tourism businesses, including campsites, in response to Covid-19. It is designed to reassure customers that businesses are adhering to government guidelines.

Martin Smith, the founder Campsites.co.uk, said bookings are still down 90% on 2019 and sounded a note of caution: “Even when sites are allowed to open again, many owners will be concerned for their own and their team’s health. Some sites are choosing not to take campervan or tent guests when they reopen – only those with their own facilities – so that they can close their toilet and shower blocks.”

But even if the opening date is pushed back, Yates remains optimistic that many Britons will manage a domestic holiday this year. “We live in hope of an Indian summer, and around 20% of sites are open all year. Others may ask their local councils for permission to open longer.”

New RETRO STYLE: A VW CAMPERVAN COULD BE YOUR HOME FROM HOME

Start in Cardiff and head west on the M4 for an easy 45-mile drive to The Mumbles, the headlands looking back across the waters of Swansea Bay.

Tour the ruins of Oystermouth Castle, then go bowling on the Victorian-era Mumbles Pier. Stay at Pitton Cross Caravan Park.

Start in Norwich and head 40 miles south to arty Aldeburgh. This was composer Benjamin Britten’s home and he’s remembered (with some controversy) with the Scallop, a 12ft sculpture on its pebble beach. Stay at Beach View Holiday Park.

Leave the coast behind and head 17 miles inland to the pretty village of Horning. Rent a boat to mess about on the Broads, then relax in a waterside pub. Stay at the Caravan Club’s Norfolk Broads site.

Taste sea air again just 20 miles away in Cromer. Go crabbing on the beach or grab a crab sandwich near the Victorian pier. Stay at the Forest Park caravan site.

Head 20 miles west to the colourful beach huts and sandy shores of Wells-next-the-Sea. It’s pretty, peaceful and perfect for picnics. Explore saltmarshes and look for seals basking in the sun. Stay at High Sand Creek campsite.

Take it easy, driving just eight miles to Burnham Deepdale. There’s a craft and food market, or ‘get jolly’ at the 18th Century Jolly Sailor pub. Stay at Deepdale Farm.

Drive 15 miles to Sandringham, said to be the Queen’s favourite country residence. Take a tour of the house and see St Mary Magdalene Church where the Royals attend a Christmas Day service. Stay at the Caravan Club’s Sandringham Estate site, then it’s 45 miles back to Norwich.

GOTHIC GRANDEUR

Start in York and take a 20-mile trip on the A59 to the spa town of Knaresborough. Explore the dungeons of its ruined castle, then head into the shadows of Mother Shipton’s Cave and see her ‘petrifying well’. Stay at Knaresborough Caravan Club site.

Relax on day two as it’s just 12 miles to Ripon. Look at the carvings under the pews in the Gothic cathedral which gave Lewis Carroll inspiration for Alice In Wonderland. Pack a picnic and head to the National Trust’s Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden for your own tea party. Stay at the River Laver Holiday Park.

Drive 50 miles through the stunning North York Moors National Park to Lealholm, billed as ‘the prettiest village in Yorkshire’. Stepping stones cross the River Esk to the 250-year-old Board Inn pub. Stay alongside llamas at Lawnsgate Farm Campsite.

It’s then just ten miles to the coast at Whitby. Stand under the 19ft-high whalebone arch before climbing 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, where the spirit of Dracula lives on – the Gothic architecture inspired Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror novel. Stay by the sea at Sandfield House Farm Holiday Park.

Yorkshire’s food capital is 25 miles away in the town of Malton, with plenty of little eateries, shops and food markets. Then walk it off in the 1,000-acre grounds of Castle Howard. Stay at Brickyard Lakes Country Park, then it’s 20 miles back to York.

SCOTTISH STARS SHINE IN ALL WEATHERS

Start in Edinburgh and a 35-mile drive takes you to the shadow of Stirling Castle, where nine-month-old Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned in 1543. Climb 250 spiral steps inside the Wallace Monument that celebrates the Braveheart legend. Stay amid ghosts at Witches Craig Caravan Park.

Take in the stunning scenery on the 30-mile drive through the Trossachs to Loch Lomond. The famously reflective waters of Loch Achray are nearby. Stay at loch-side Cashel Campsite.

Ben Nevis awaits after a 90-mile drive to Fort William. Climb it yourself or climb aboard the Jacobite steam train that’s like a real-life Hogwarts Express. Enjoy incredible views at Glen Nevis Caravan and Camping Park.

Pack a picnic and look for monsters on the 70-mile drive alongside Loch Ness to Inverness. Here, Shakespeare-lovers can search for a copy of Macbeth in Leakey’s Bookshop, one of the most beautiful in the world, before heading to nearby Cawdor Castle. Stay at Bunchrew Caravan Park.

A 30-mile drive south takes you to sporty Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park. Hiking, biking and canoeing are draws in summer, but it’s equally easy to relax. The town is well known for its craft beer. Stay at Oakwood Caravan Park.

There’s more activity 55 miles south in Pitlochry, where you can try whitewater rafting on the River Tay or take guided climbs in nearby canyons. Stay at Blair Castle Caravan Park.

After a 30-mile drive, there are museums and galleries galore in Perth. Stay at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club site, then it’s 40 miles back to Edinburgh.

FEEL THE DRAMA OF POLDARK COUNTRY

Start among the surfers in Newquay and drive 30 miles south-west to St Ives. While sporty types head to the beach, culture lovers can see the Tate gallery or the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Stay at Ayr Holiday Park.

Roads get crowded so short distances are best. Head ten miles to Penzance where there’s a lot to fit in, including the Art Deco lido. Close by are Land’s End, the cliffside Minack Theatre and perfect Mousehole. Stay at Treen Farm Campsite.

Drive 15 miles to Helston on the edge of the National Trust’s Lizard Peninsula. Hike to the lighthouse or find seal pups, otters and penguins at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Stay at Poldown Caravan Park.

It’s 25 miles east to St Mawes where the ‘little village with the big harbour’ is a glorious place to tuck into Cornish ice cream. Stay at Trewince Farm Holiday Park.

Start early to make time for The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project as you drive 35 miles to Bodmin and the heart of Poldark country. Check if there’s a Scary Cinema Night on at Bodmin Jail, with horror films projected against its walls. Stay at Mena Farm.

Head 20 miles north to Tintagel Castle, where King Arthur’s legend was born. The gorge footbridge is a wonder. Stay at Trewthett Farm.

Another 20 miles takes you to the foodie paradise of Padstow, home to celebrity chefs such as Rick Stein. Stay at Padstow Touring Park, then it’s 20 miles back to Newquay.

How to get behind the wheel – and dodge bumps in the road

Who can rent a camper van? Most rental firms say you need to have had a full UK driving licence for at least two years and be aged between 25 and 75. Two (sometimes three) people can be named drivers.

How much does it cost? Anything from £400 to £1,400 plus a week, depending on the campervan, the location and season. Smaller vans sleep two people, bigger ones up to six.

Do I need insurance? Comprehensive cover is included with most rentals, but check the damage excess – this can be up to £2,000.

What type should I choose? Brand-new motorhomes will be more spacious, easier to drive and use less petrol. But plenty of firms rent out vintage VW campervans for the full retro experience.

What’s included? Bedding and cooking utensils are standard issue. Most campervans will have gas rings for cooking and small fridges, while large motorhomes will have toilets and showers too.

Are they easy to drive? It depends on their size and age. Start with a short trip to get a feel for the ride – and avoid bumpy roads.

Where can we stop for the night? You need to be in a campsite – lay-bys and car parks are off-limits. Fees normally include power and water and start at about £15 a night.

Top tips : Don’t drive too far each day – the fewer miles you cover, the more fun you’ll have. Pack light, especially food, as you can stock up as you go. And take a torch for late-night trips to the loo.

Interest rockets by 250% for new VW California's

"Volkswagen is preparing for a potential surge in camper van sales as middle-class Britons plan a summer of socially-distanced staycations.

Requests for quotes for VW's £55,000 California model rocketed 250 per cent in April compared with March.

Inquiries about its new, larger Grand California model – which costs £72,000 – soared by 100 per cent.

The hi-tech vehicles – which can come with solar panels, TV, and ambient lighting – are a far cry from the early VW campers, which became a symbol of the hippy movement.

VW sold almost 1,500 vans in the UK last year, and there are thought to be around 90,000 of all models and ages trundling around the country.

The sophisticated options now on offer are likely to attract a new set of customers who want to ready themselves and their families as quickly as possible for post-Covid-19 holidays.

A VW spokesman said: 'We are certainly expecting to see a trend towards more UK-based holidays, and in what's a safe personal space.'

Campsites have reported a big rise in bookings, and are hoping for a record season once ministers ease domestic tourism restrictions"

"The recent statement by the UK Government on the gradual easing of the current lockdown restrictions is welcome news.

However, the Government advice does not currently give the dates that campsites and touring sites are able to reopen and is conditional on further progress being made. We will continue to liaise with Visit Britain, Tourism Alliance and British Holiday and Home Parks Association to ensure best practice operating, cleansing and safety protocols are developed for when we are able to reopen.

At this time we are planning on the assumption that we will be able to introduce a phased reopening of our sites network during July.

We look forward to receiving the full briefing documents from the Government (and devolved Governments) which will enable us to make firmer plans for reopening the UK sites network.

We will, of course, ensure members are made aware of any changes or alterations to this position and we would ask you to regularly check the website for updates. Please call our contact centre only if you have an urgent enquiry.

Overseas travel

Our overseas travel and worldwide holidays team are working closely with key partners internationally to understand likely timescales for the resumption of holiday travel. Many European and Worldwide Authorities have issued guidance on their own overseas and domestic travel arrangements and we are continuing to evaluate these.
